The Challenges and Rewards of Being a Freelance Medical Assistant

When it comes to freelance work there is always the question of where the next job is going to come from.  As a freelance medical assistant, that isn’t exactly the case because of how in-demand the position is.

If you are thinking about stepping into this career then here are the challenges and benefits to working as a freelance medical assistant.

The Challenges

While not insurmountable, the challenges that you can face in this world of freelancing can be a little bit different compared to other jobs and their challenges.

Taking on Multiple Jobs

If you are taking on multiple positions at once in order to help yourself make a full-time income, then there is always the possibility of getting more than just confused with information between offices.  This can lead to a multitude of other issues such as breaching confidentiality agreements.

Confidentiality Agreements

One of the largest challenges that you can face as any kind of medical freelancer is having to keep information between patients confidential.  Not only are you going to have to keep things confidential patient wise, but also there might be proprietary ways of working through materials that shouldn’t be crossed between offices or medical facilities.

The Challenges of Patients

Regardless of freelancing or not, this is a challenge for any medical assistant.  You are going to have to constantly work with patients and not all of them are going to be as kind as your favorite patient that you enjoy working with.

When that is the case, you have to be able to handle the different personality types and the different issues that are going to pop up when working with multiple patients at one or multiple locations.

Working hrough Physical Exhaustion

Whether or not you are working at multiple locations to make up full-time or if you are doing temporary work at multiple locations, there’s the issue of physical exhaustion.  These jobs require that you move around quite a bit and there may also be some lifting that is required as well.

Maintaining Equipment

Like the list of equipment here there are many things that you are going to have to maintain for yourself.  Because your work is freelance based this means that you aren’t covered by a business for business expenses.  All of that leads to different taxation and a few more headaches to deal with.

Maintaining Education

For some this can be a benefit and for others this can be a challenge for your job.  The main part of the idea is that you have to maintain your education through additional courses as well as re-taking tests that ensure you are remembering necessary information.

The Benefits

As a job with amazing flexibility and an incredible amount of job security, the benefits often outweigh the challenges of working as a medical assistant.

Job Security

In driving around today, how many medical facilities did you see? If you are in a more metropolitan area then you have probably seen quite a few from medical centers to the random offices that are along highways.  Either direction, those offices are your job security.  Medical assistants are needed everywhere and have very valuable skills.

Regular Income

This coincides with the job security aspect that comes along with working as a medical assistant.  Because you are more than likely going to find a medical office a stone’s throw away, there is going to be a place for regular income especially in the freelance world.

Because the gig world is full of opportunities it is best to take advantage of where you live and find as many positions as possible to ensure you have regular income.

Helping Others

Probably one of the benefits that draws most people to the profession is the fact that you can help people on a regular basis.  This isn’t a job for the weak of heart because there can be situations that are very difficult.  No matter the difficulty though, you will still get to help so many people in their daily lives.

Flexible Hours

When it comes time to make your schedule for the week, you may find that there is far more flexibility than you could have imagined.  If businesses are hiring multiple medical assistants then you probably can have a fair pick of hours!

Administrative Advancement

The longer you work as a medical assistant, the easier it is going to be to find ways to advance in your career.  There are office management positions that you can come across and if you’re lucky, you may also find offices that are looking for new medical assistants to train for just those positions.
